He recently took his Mahindra Thar to Spiti amid heavy snowfall.
The Himalayan region is known for its harsh winters and diesel vehicles often struggle to start in the morning. The youtuber Dinesh recently took his Mahindra Thar to Spiti for winter adventures. Being a diesel SUV, it was expected that Thar would struggle to start in the morning. One such morning Dinesh found his Mahindra Thar was not starting. Diesel has a freezing point of -8.1 degrees and in the night temperature dropped to -19 degrees. Metallic cylinder become very cold during frosty winter so vehicles struggle to start in morning. Diesel fuel burns at a very high temperature than other gasoline/petrol. It was evident that Mahindra Thar will struggle in the morning.
Dinesh's Jugaad to Start the Thar
The youtuber tries to start his Mahindra Thar but fails to do so. So he comes up with indian jugaad. He uses his tent heater to heat the engine. It was very clever of mind of him to use the heater. Diesel engines tend to start when they’re provided enough insulation and that’s what he did. After few attempts, Dinesh was able start his Mahindra Thar.
Tips
Diesel vehicles need to be taken special care in harsh climate conditions. There are three things which users can use to quickly start diesel vehicles.
- Block Heaters: Few diesel cars come with built in block heaters which help to keep the engine block warm during cold night.
- Battery Warmer: During cold night battery also gets drained quickly and it could be also one of the reason vehicle struggling to start. One can use battery warmers such as hot plate or electric blanket to keep the battery safe.
- Oil Warmers: One can buy a heated dipstick to heat the oil in the engine. This can effectively heat the engine and start your vehicle.
Things to avoid in frosty morning
One should avoid engine-starting fluids to start your engine. If those fluids are not used in right proportions then there could be explosion. Instead one can install starting fluid kit injection which is safe and effective.
