As India is gearing up for electric market, lot of Automobile manufacturers are launching electric vehicles in the market. Hyundai recently launched their electric subcompact crossover SUV Kona in the market. It was first introduced in 2018 in South Korea and quickly it was rolled out all over the world. Over the years, it has won several awards in various countries.
Exterior
Kona gets a typical subcompact crossover SUV design. At the front it comes with sleek LED headlamps and DRLs which looks bold and scintillating. The aerodynamically design front closed grille gets special treatment denoting its an electric vehicle. The active air flap bumper reduces the overall drag and increases the efficiency. On the side Kona gets body colored ORVMs with turn indicators, 17 inches aerodynamically designed alloy wheels and sleek, sporty roof rails which further enhance its overall look. It gets sleek LED tail lights at the rear and wrap around bumper across the reversing parking lights. Overall, the design of this SUV is quite progressive and composed.
Interior
The SUV gets a premium black interior along with leather wrapped steering wheel and leather seats. The Dashboard gets a soft touch treatment and comes with a massive 17.77 cm infotainment system which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also gets bridge type centre console with shift by wire Automatic transmission, nicely crafted buttons and wireless charging pad. Steering wheel gets mounted controls and comes with a paddle shifters for regenerative braking. The SUV also comes with ventilated seats for front passengers and 10 way power adjustable driver seat.
The SUV gets a fully digital instrument cluster with supervision. The infotainment system provides good information about Charge management, driving information and power consumption stats. It gets centre armrest for front as well as rear passengers. The seats are quite comfortable and has a good amount of headroom and knee room for an average passenger. The Smart Electric Sunroof provides good amount of natural light in the cabin. Needless to say, it gets plenty of comfort and convenience features like Power windows, Smart key, 60:40 split seats, Rear ventilation duct, USB charger, Cruise Control and many more.
Safety
Hyundai Kona has scored a 5 star rating in ANCAP testing. Since same model has been brought into India, we can expect the safety rating to be same standard. It comes with 6 Airbags (Driver, Passenger, Front side and Curtain). It also gets safety features like ABS, Hill start assist control (HAC), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM).
As per new BS6 norms, it comes with ISOFIX anchorages, Rear Parking Sensors & Camera and High Speed alert. Hyundai has left no stone unturned to make this EV safest in the segment, The EV is also equipped with some of the good to have features like Central locking, All 4 Disc brakes and Automatic Headlamps.
One of the coolest safety feature is Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS) which generates engine sound to ensure pedestrian safety.

Battery & Performance
The Kona gets a 39.2 kWh Lithium ion Polymer battery. For the AC charging (0-100%)** it takes 6 hr 10 min to charge full whereas for DC (0-80%) @ 50 kW** it takes approx. 57 mins. The SUV comes with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor which produces 136 PS of power and 395 Nm of torque paired with Automatic transmission. Given that it’s an electric vehicle, the massive amount of torque is available from the beginning which makes it very fun to drive. It gets an ARAI certified range of 452 km and in the real world we can expect it to anywhere between 250 – 350 km which is quite respectable. Kona comes with 4 driving modes Eco, Eco+, Comfort and Sport and does 0-100 kmph in just 9.7 seconds.
