Fortuner was launched in 2009 in India by Toyota. Soon, it became famous and quickly acquire the luxury SUV market. The company has sold more than 1,60,000 units since 2009 with an average of 1000 units per month. The numbers are quite impressive given that it is a luxury SUV with a price of more than 25 lakh. The new BS6 emission norms have been in place since April, 2020 and Toyota has made Fortuner BS6 compliant. Fortuner Exterior

Fortuner is one of the most muscular and stylish looking SUV in the market. It commands a good road presence with its big body design. It gets projector headlamps along with LED DRLs at the front with nicely integrated LED fog lamps. The three row chrome grille along with Toyota logo looks scintillating and gives it distinct touch. It comes with chrome finished door handles and electric adjustable body colored ORVMs.

The big highlight on this SUV is the chrome strip on the window which goes all around the body giving it a premium look. At the rear, it gets chrome plate with Fortuner embossing on the tailgate and big LED tail lights. The 7 seater SUV, Fortuner has a spacious leather interior and equally loaded with latest technology. The 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre comes with an intelligent satellite navigation to keep you in the right direction. However, it misses out with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which is kind of disappointing given the price of this massive SUV. It gets Tilt and Telescopic Steering, Semi Digital Instrument cluster,  DVD player, Cruise Control and push button start stop feature. Reverse parking sensors and Reverse Parking Camera help you park this big SUV in tight parking places.

For the comfort and convenience, Fortuner comes with Dual zone Automatic Climate Control, 12V Charging Socket, Power adjustable front seats, Centre armrest at the front as well as rear along with 2 cup holders, Powered windows and Cooled upper glove box. The 3rd row seats can be reclined and 2nd row seats come with 60:40 split, thus increasing the boot space to a great extent. Toyota has managed to reduce the body roll up to some extent, giving you a comfortable ride experience.

Fortuner Engine Specifications

Toyota offers Fortuner in Petrol as well as Diesel options.

  1. 2.7L DOHC, 4 cylinder, 2694 cc Petrol engine producing a power of 166 PS @ 4000 rpm and torque of 245 Nm @ 4000 rpm. The engine is mated to 5 speed Manual and 6-speed Automatic gearbox.
  2. 2.8L DOHC, 4 cylinder, 2755 cc Diesel engine producing a power of 177 PS @ 3400 rpm and 420/450 Nm (Manual/Automatic) @ 1400 – 2600 rpm. It comes with 6-speed Manual as well as Automatic options.

Both engines are BS6 compliant. The Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) technology and Sequential Automatic Technology (AT) allows smooth shifting of gears. The engines are more refined and make less noise compared to its BS4 variant. There are two drive modes on offer, namely Eco and Power.  Toyota offers Paddle Shifters and Shift lock to the Automatic variant. The SUV has 80 litres of fuel capacity and a mileage of 10.1 to 15.04 kmpl giving you a range of more than 1000+ km on a full tank.

Fortuner Chassis, Suspension & Brakes

Toyota Fortuner is a true SUV. It is built on ladder on frame chassis which is ideal for an SUV. The new frame is more rigid and overall strength has been increased. The Double wishbone suspension at the front and Coil Spring at the rear enhance the ride quality further and decrease the body roll to a great extent. The Vehicle Stability Control keeps possibility of skidding on tricky terrains in check.

It would be unfair to talk about its off road capabilities given that it is designed to go anywhere. The 4X4 SUV comes with Active Traction Control (A-TRC) which offers superior Limited Slip Differential (LSD) performance.  Fortuner BS6 is Sigma-4 certified, which is a sign of being a true SUV. The Electronic Drive Control allows switching between drive modes effortlessly. The Downhill Assist Control (DAC) and Hill Assist Control (HAC) keeps the vehicle in control with sufficient acceleration and braking.

The 4WD comes with both High and Low range, which comes handy when you’re driving on rough terrains. The Approach & Departure angle of 0.51 rad and 0.44 rad gives you enough confidence to take it off road as and when required.

There are total 6 variants on offer and price for the base variant starts at INR 28,66,000 and goes up to INR 34,43,000 ex showroom Delhi. 2.7L 4X2 AT Petrol is the top selling model from the lineup, however, for off-road enthusiast, 2.8L 4X4 MT Diesel could be the ideal choice. In the segment, Fortuner competes with Ford Endeavour and Mahindra Alturas.
