Mahindra Thar is an iconic SUV in India. Thar was launched to fill the void left by its predecessor Mahindra MM540. Thar soon acquire market cap and became instant hit among off road enthusiasts. Famous for its boxy design and off road capability, it was one of the most awaited launch of 2020. After so many spy shots and leaks from last one year, Mahindra has finally unveiled the second generation Thar. The new model definitely looks bigger, wider, powerful and certainly safer than before.
Mahindra Thar Exterior
Mahindra has completely redesigned new Thar from scratch. Though it has retained its boxy shape however it is more muscular and bold. On the front it gets a big horizontal hood along with LED headlights and newly designed grille. The front bumper is big and has nicely integrated fog lamps. The SUV is more wider and looks very attractive. The new Thar now comes with bigger tyres and alloy wheels which gives it a good stance and provide much needed stability.
From the behind, Mahindra has kept the SUV simple. It gets a big black bumper, LED tail light and full size spare wheel which gives a distinct look. Mahindra now also provides factory fitted hardtop making it more secure and safe. The new Thar looks stunning and is definitely going to command good road presence. Being more wider and big tyres, we can expect less amount of body roll.
Mahindra Thar Interior
Thar always had ergonomic issues when it comes to interior, however, this has changed now. Mahindra has updated new Thar with latest features and ergonomics, making it one of the best off road SUV compared to its competitors. In terms of technology, it gets a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Power steering, Keyless entry, steering mounted controls and Cruise Control add more practicality to this SUV. Powered windows and big storage options on the door as well as in the centre, provide more convenience. The switch controls are water resistant. The instrument cluster gets a TFT screen along with analog speedometer.
For the comfort, the new Thar is equipped with powerful AC. At the front it gets sporty seats with height and lumbar adjustment whereas at the rear it now comes with front facing seats. Since this SUV goes distances and likes adventure, most of the interior is water resistant and seats are washable. The factory fitted hard top keeps the cabin cool and big windows at the rear provide more natural light in the compartment.

Mahindra Thar Safety
The SUV was always criticized for safety, however, this time Mahindra has equipped it with state of the art safety features. The company has built this new SUV on its 3rd generation ladder on frame chassis platform. It now comes with a dual Airbags at the front for Driver as well as Co-Driver and ABS with ESP as standard. The built-in roll cage further elevates the safety in case of any rollover situations keeping the occupants safe. Other safety features include Central locking, ISOFIX Child seat mounts and Reverse Parking Sensors.
Mahindra Thar Engine
The 2nd generation Thar is now offered in both Petrol as well as in Diesel options. The good point is the company has kept 4×4 as standard across all variants. There are two engine options to choose from:
- The 2L 4 cylinder mStallion 150 TGDi Petrol engine producing a power of 150 PS @ 5000 rpm and torque of 300-320 Nm @ 1250 – 3000 rpm.
- 2.2L 4 cylinder mHawk 120 Diesel engine producing a power of 130 PS @ 3750 rpm and torque of 300 Nm @ 1600-2800 rpm.
Both engines are offered with 6-Speed Manual as well as Torque Converter Automatic Transmission. Both Front & Rear axle gets a semi floating with 4.3:1.
Mahindra Thar Chassis, Suspension & Brakes
Thar is built on a ladder on frame chassis which is the best platform for any off road SUV. For comfortable ride experience, new Thar gets an Independent Double Wishbone suspension at the front, whereas at the rear it comes with a Multilink Solid Rear Axle. Whether its off road or long highway rides, to keep the SUV in control it is equipped with ABS with ESP technology. To stop this big SUV, it gets a 303 mm Disc at front and 282 mm Drum at the rear.
The company offers Thar in mainly two variants, AX and LX series. The AX series is known for Adventure and comes with an R16 inch alloy wheels whereas the LX (Lifestyle) series is equipped with R18 inch wheels.
Mahindra Thar Off Road Capability
It would be injustice if we don’t talk about it’s off-roading capabilities. The new Thar comes with a approach angle of 41.2 (AX) deg and departure angle of 36 deg (AX) which is of international standards. The rampover angle is over 27 deg which allows you to conquer toughest terrains at your wish. Given that Thar is expected to get wet and bound cross water and hence it has a whooping 650 mm Water Wading Depth and Ground clearance of 219 mm (AX).
The infotainment screen shows Compass, G-monitor, Wheel Angle, Torque and Speed which assist you in tackling tough terrains.

Mahindra Thar 2020 Price & Variants
Mahindra Thar 2020 is now available in both Petrol as well as Diesel options along with the Manual and Automatic transmission. The prices of new Thar will be announced on 2nd October and bookings will be opened on the same day. It is expected to be priced between INR 10 – 15 lakhs ex showroom.
